Pend were approached to reconfigure the internal layout of a Grade A listed property in Edinburgh’s historic New Town. Our clients wished to create a home that better suited their family’s needs and an interior which was contemporary yet remained subservient to the existing charm of the building.
The project was an exercise in interior constraint, detailing finishes and fittings which emphasised and enhanced the character of the Georgian property whilst creating a sophisticated, modern design aesthetic throughout.
Process
The existing property had a small kitchen to the rear of the house and a large principal bedroom that overlooked the street. Our decision to swap these functions created a clear differentiation between the ‘public’ and ‘private’ realms within the property and allowed the kitchen to become a light-filled and welcoming room, suitable for hosting friends and family.
A full redecoration of the property was carried out, working closely with our clients to create striking spaces. Each room was designed with its own unique identity, accented by detailed motifs that tie the whole project together: A reclaimed oak flooring was laid seamlessly throughout the property, the deep blue tones of the master bedroom were adopted by the kitchen cabinetry, the brass fittings of the family bathroom reflected the brass accents in the kitchen hardware and light fixtures, and blackened metal faceplates echoed the finishes in the newly created en-suite. The end result is a home which feels holistic and coherent, seamlessly blending a traditional and contemporary architectural language.
