This project involved the reconfiguration of a tired Grade-A listed Georgian flat in the heart of Stockbridge.

The design focused on fully utilising the floor space occupied by the centrally located ‘box rooms’ and turning them into a compact kitchen space which is connected to the principal living room through a new opening. The existing kitchen space is therefore re-purposed as a second bedroom.

Process

The project became a study in constraint, creating serene and meaningful light-filled spaces for the occupants to enjoy. A full interior design exercise was carried out and a holistic approach of pairing the existing ornate building fabric with a minimal and clean aesthetic was adopted. The kitchen units are deliberately subtle and topped with a dark stone countertop which reflects the fireplace surround. Existing doors from the box-rooms are re-purposed as sliders to enable the kitchen to be shut off from the Living Room whilst helping to preserve the character of the space. An internal bathroom is lit from above with a rooflight, whilst brass fittings stand out against the white wall tiles and reflect the brass ironmongery of the internal doors.

Materials were carefully selected to be both economical and striking. Existing floor boards have been retained, sanded and oiled to create a calming and neutral backdrop to the spaces. White-washed walls, ceilings and detailing allows natural light to reflect through the spaces and provide a backdrop for interior features such as lighting, the fireplace or personal items.
